Corporate ladder is a good example of zugzwuang in real life. Once you started climbing the ladder, every now and then , you may like to stay calm and just be there, you don't want to move up any more. The option of going down is not exciting either :-) So this is the case, where you just don't want to move, but you must try to move up! Its the same tragedy like a player in zugzwuang over a chessboard.
In a more generilzed situation, everyone wants to move up in real life. It gets harder and harder as you go up. It becomes competitive and tiring. When one feels that way, (s)he wants to rest for a while, wants to hold that time! That's not possible when you are in the competitive game you started!
In these examples we compared "moving up in real life" with the "any move over the chessboard"; its not necessary that "moving up in real life" is the only example for zugzwuang in real life, but that's what we found so far!
